and on..

I am crushing week 3. I had family visitors for 5 days last week, resulting in missed runs...as well as SNOW that totally messed things up. But I'm into the full swing of week 3, and I'm CRUSHING it.

The program requires 3 runs a week...I have been extending it to 5-6 runs before I advance to the next week. I feel more fit and confident going that way. It's slower, but hey..I'm running still, I haven't quit and I'm actually enjoying it!

I crushed my run today. crushed it.

I ran.

Singing in the rain...

That's all it's been doing lately, so my gear is soaked.

I started Week 3 day 1 today. It was tough. I was able to do the first 3 minute run in full, but only 1/2 of the other 3 minute run. I walked it. But to compensate, during the cool down, I actually did 2 more 90 second runs (with a short walk in between) and then to beat myself up even more, I decided I would do 3 sets of 100 yard fast runs .... I can't say sprints, because by this time my body was very tired. So the fast runs were faster than the jog I do, fast enough to wind me completely by the end of it.

It felt good to push myself hard.

And i know I did, because my lungs were hacking away for awhile after that workout.
But all is good. Because I'm on week 3 (but have been doing this for 4 weeks now)

Things to mention:
-no shin or calf /ankle pain this week
- i am walking taller and i can literally feel myself coming out of a fog.
-i feel better about myself.
-i feel more confident.
-i feel strong

I am a runner.

Still Running!

I am on Week 2 of the Couch to 5K. I should actually be on week 3, but I did week 1 twice...just to feel better, more confident going into week 2. Whatever works right?

I'm so pleased with myself. Between walking/running in the park, and training at the track with my ipod couch to 5k program, I'm actually active! I've been doing 6 days per week, alternating running one day, walking/runnning in the park the other day.

I've been experiencing some pain in my lower shin/ankle area, in particular, one leg on the outer edge. Quite a knot of a muscle. I was thinking a few reasons for this pain:

1. I'm overdoing it.

2. My body is not used to being active, and the muscles are in distresss.

3. My shoes are not correct for my feet.

So I went to The Runner's Den in Port Moody, all prepared to invest in a new pair of shoes. Why not? I'm doing this a bit more serious than I've ever been, so I want to take care of my feet and avoid future injury. The man there looked at my feet, my shoes, my walk and concluded that my shoes were fine for me and that he wasn't going to sell me a new pair. I should come back in about 2 months, and then we'll 'upgrade' to a new pair.

What? You don't want to sell me a new pair? I don't get new cool colour reflectors on my feet?

While I was there, he proceeded to give me a ton of advice on the pain I was experiencing, some stretches (lots of stretching is what I needed for that problem) some ice advice, and some positivity which felt really great! He also asked me what direction I was running around the track- bingo! That was the side that was feeling the pain! I'm going to try running the other direction tomorrow and see what happens, if there is any difference.

How cool to go into a store, and you don't get bombarded with upselling! Did they not know I WANT to look cool? I had to spend money in there, though. He was so nice! He just saved me a lot of money! So I bought two things that I actually DO need - an uber cool ASICS running hat with wicking technology. Now I really look like a runner. :-)

Also picked this up, which is perfect as the weather gets warmer and I don't need my jacket:

It is just a little reflector belt with an attached, pull out ID tag with medical emergency info, and a small, mesh pouch which will hold keys, ipod, and my glucose tablets.

** Can't say enough about Carli's downloads for Couch to 5K! Week 2 music rocks!

On non run days...

Today I went with the dog to our local large park - large meaning over 400 acres of forest, streams, a few lakes, bogs, bark mulch trails and gigantic trees. What I love about it there is they have off leash dog time up to 10am in the morning. I think I'll be walking/running her on the off days in the park, as she just has a blast. Maybe I'll start running in there too....there's a BUT.
But, the park has bears often. More in the summer, but it's a worry. Because of off leash time however there are lots of people doing the same as I with the dogs.

it felt good.

It's only been a few days, but exercise DOES clear my head and make me have a bit more clarity and energy. I already am starting to feel stronger.

is how I felt after my run today.

Couch to 5 k... I downloaded the podcast for weeks 1 and 2 from Carli at Running Into Shape . It follows the couch to 5 k program but with music. I just can't be bothered right now to fight with my itouch and songs and playlists. I'm a big time flicker - tv and radio, and so i need something ready made so all I have to do is press play and its done.

Carli's downloads are fairly current music and this is a biggie for me, since I'm used to kid music rocking my minivan lately.

I did well. I even ran a full extra 3/4 lap straight to push myself a bit more. At the end of the program, I was like, THAT"S IT??? I"M DONE??? And with that, I ran an extra 3/4 lap.

I need to figure out why I am famished after working out. I always have felt that way, and am feeling that way again. I remember in my early 20's when I would do my gym classs and feel starved afterwards. I need to figure out how to stop that and quick.

I can't stand the feeling of my insulin stomach. That's what I call it, because before I was put on insulin, I had a little bit of a tummy, but now I have an insulin gut. It's freaking awful. I honestly don't mind taking insulin injections daily, but I cannot stand what it has done to my body. And yes, I will take responsibility for my lack of exercise and low activity level, but I'm doing what I was doing before, and insulin just blew me up like a balloon. I purchased Slimstyles WellBetX meal replacement shake mix in chocolate to hopefully help me kick start some weight loss. It's geared for diabetics and blood sugar regulation, and is also meant for weightloss. I'm starting it slow, as it recommends (like 1/2 the dose of scoops because it's so high fiber you'll explode otherwise) Tomorrow I go full scoop and I'll see how I can manage breakfast AND lunch. I plan on having a mid morning snack of fruit/nuts or crackers cheese to combat any lows.....

Today I ran. and I felt fearless.

Back in the saddle...

It's pouring rain. It does this most of the time here. I finally pulled my ass off the couch and went for a run. I downloaded a Couch to 5K podcast and it helped alot. I did 30 minutes of the run walk intervals. This is what I looked like 10 min after the run. What it doesn't show is my soaking wet running jacket and soaked to the bones pants and shoes.
Splish splash at the track. It was flooded but I kept going. Kind of like a child who doesn't care about getting wet.

- more athletic socks. black trouser socks don't cut it with running shoes.
- long enough pants to run in - splashing in puddles made my bare 2 inches of ankles cold.
- hat to keep a little rain out of my face.

all I thought about was - is my mascara running?

got that after run cough/ahem thing going on again.
